More Than a Weekend Away: The Impact of Restore & Reclaim

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, the pink ribbons may begin to disappear—but the need for meaningful support continues long after October.

For women affected by breast cancer, recovery can involve far more than medical treatment. There can be emotional exhaustion, changes to identity and relationships, the ongoing mental load of appointments and responsibilities, and the need to find a way forward after a life-changing diagnosis.

This October, Women’s Healing Sanctuary welcomed seven women to our inaugural Restore & Reclaim Breast Cancer Recovery Retreat—a fully sponsored two-night wellbeing weekend offering rest, connection and the simple but powerful experience of being cared for.

Their feedback shows just how much a weekend like this can mean.

Leaving the Mental Load at the Door

Restore & Reclaim was delivered in partnership with The Otis Foundation and Westfund Health Insurance, enabling all seven women to attend at no cost.

The women arrived at the Sanctuary for different reasons, including exhaustion, healing from trauma, relaxation and grief recovery. While each brought her own story, their feedback revealed a shared experience of feeling welcomed, supported and safe.

One guest described what she valued most:

“I most appreciated being looked after and cared for and being able to leave the ‘mental load’ at the door.”

For a few days, the women were able to step away from everyday responsibilities and focus on their own wellbeing—without needing to organise the meals, care for anyone else or explain what they had been through.

A Meaningful Impact on Wellbeing

Every guest found the retreat helpful, with six of the seven women reporting that their overall wellbeing had significantly improved.

All seven felt more relaxed and less stressed, while the outcomes they most commonly took home were increased peacefulness, feeling more grounded and experiencing inner healing.

Women also spoke of increased resilience, renewed hope, permission for self-care and greater confidence to reclaim their power and boundaries.

These outcomes reflect what Restore & Reclaim was created to provide: not a busy schedule or pressure to achieve a particular result, but a gentle space where each woman could rest, reconnect and participate in the way that felt right for her.

Feeling Safe, Seen and Connected

Creating an environment where women feel emotionally and physically safe is central to every stay at Women’s Healing Sanctuary.

Every guest said she felt comfortable, respected and safe during the retreat. All seven also experienced meaningful connection with the other women.

One guest captured the experience simply as:

“Being held in a safe space.”

Another shared:

“The space was big enough to have your own space, but still felt like a family.”

This balance of connection and solitude is an important part of the Sanctuary experience. Women can join conversations and activities when they wish, while still having the freedom to retreat, rest or spend quiet time surrounded by nature.

Care in the Smallest Details

The women’s feedback also reflected the care they felt throughout their stay—from the welcome they received and the comfort of the accommodation to the peaceful surroundings and nourishing meals.

As one guest shared:

“Food was amazing, not just delicious but I could sense caring and love in the food I had here.”

Six women chose to participate in optional wellbeing experiences during their stay, including yoga, sound healing, massage and reiki. Others found restoration in the quieter moments—the trees, dams, pool, fire pit and space to simply pause.

For one woman, the impact was lasting:

“I’ll treasure my experience here forever.”

Listening, Learning and Looking Ahead

Restore & Reclaim was created as a pilot retreat, allowing us to listen to women affected by breast cancer and learn what meaningful restorative support looks like for them.

The demand was clear from the beginning, with all seven places filled within 24 hours. Following the retreat, every guest said she would recommend Women’s Healing Sanctuary and would consider returning.

We will use their feedback to refine future retreats, including exploring longer stays or an earlier arrival time. Most importantly, their experiences have reinforced the need for opportunities that support women’s wellbeing beyond diagnosis and active treatment.

We hope Restore & Reclaim will be the beginning of an ongoing program supporting more women affected by breast cancer.

Beyond Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages important conversations about screening, early detection and treatment. As October ends, it is equally important to remember that women may continue to need care and understanding throughout recovery and well beyond active treatment.

Sometimes that support looks like professional care or practical information. Sometimes it looks like having permission to pause, enjoying a meal prepared with love, sitting quietly among the trees or sharing space with women who understand.

For seven women this October, it looked like Restore & Reclaim.

To each woman who trusted us with her weekend: thank you. It was a privilege to welcome you.

To The Otis Foundation and Westfund Health Insurance: thank you for helping remove the financial barrier and making this experience possible.

Together, we created more than a weekend away. We created space for women to feel peaceful, grounded, cared for and hopeful—and we hope this is only the beginning.
