Your Health Belongs on the To-Do List Too

Your Wellbeing Matters Too

Women are often very good at noticing what everyone else needs.

We remember the appointments, check in on the people we love, keep households and workplaces moving, offer emotional support and quietly fill the gaps when something needs to be done.

But somewhere among all that caring, our own wellbeing can slip further and further down the list.

Women’s Health Week offers an important reminder that our health deserves attention too. This year’s theme, “Do it anyway,” is not about pushing through pain, exhaustion or pressure. It is about taking small steps towards better health in a way that feels right for you, whether that means asking for support, seeking another opinion, making time to rest or finally attending to something you have been putting off.

Wellbeing is more than an appointment

Looking after your health includes attending check-ups, seeking medical advice and paying attention when something does not feel right.

But wellbeing also encompasses the many small choices that support us physically, mentally and emotionally.

It can be eating something nourishing when you are busy, moving your body in a way that feels good, protecting your sleep, spending time outside or having an honest conversation with someone you trust.

It can also mean recognising that you are tired before you reach complete exhaustion.

Jean Hailes for Women’s Health is exploring five simple areas during Women’s Health Week: fuelling, moving, resting, breathing and connecting. Together, they offer a gentle reminder that caring for ourselves does not need to be complicated or perfect.

Small steps still count

When life is already full, the idea of adding a new wellbeing routine can feel like one more obligation.

Perhaps the answer is not to do more, but to begin with one small act of care.

That might look like:

  • booking the health appointment you have been delaying
  • stepping outside for ten quiet minutes
  • choosing movement that supports rather than punishes your body
  • saying no to something that is draining you
  • accepting help instead of automatically saying, “I’m fine”
  • calling a friend who helps you feel understood
  • giving yourself permission to rest without first earning it

No single action needs to transform your life. Small, consistent choices can remind you that your needs matter and that your wellbeing is worthy of time and attention.

Rest is part of caring for your health

Rest is often the first thing women sacrifice and the last thing we allow ourselves to prioritise.

Yet rest is not simply the absence of work. It gives our minds and bodies an opportunity to recover, settle and restore. It can help us step away from the constant demands of everyday life and hear our own thoughts again.

Sometimes that might mean an early night, an afternoon without plans or a quiet cup of tea outside. At other times, we may need a more meaningful pause from our usual environment and responsibilities.

There is no weakness in recognising that you need a break. Responding to that need is an act of self-awareness and care.

Connection matters too

Women’s wellbeing is also strengthened through connection.

Being able to speak honestly, share an experience or simply spend time with people who make us feel safe can ease the sense that we must manage everything alone.

Connection does not always require a deep conversation. It can be found in laughter over a shared meal, a walk with a friend, time spent in nature or the comfort of being with people who allow you to simply be yourself.

When women are supported, heard and cared for, they are better able to navigate life’s challenges without losing sight of themselves.

What do you need right now?

This Women’s Health Week, perhaps the most valuable thing you can do is pause long enough to ask yourself that question.

Not what does everyone else need from you?

Not what should you be able to manage?

But what would genuinely support your health and wellbeing right now?

Your answer might be practical, emotional, physical or deeply personal. It may be something small you can do today or a larger commitment to creating space for yourself.

Whatever it is, you do not need to wait until everything else is finished before your wellbeing can become a priority.
